Oscillating floor fan

There are floor fans that only have simple knobs for different speed levels. In order to feel the airflow around your head or in a different direction, you can tilt the fans or simply set them up on a higher position, for example on a desk.

Other floor fans have an adjustable fan head as well as an oscillation (swiveling) feature.
Controllers

Modern floor fans usually come with 2 or 3 speed levels so the air movement can be adjusted between light breeze and strong draught. In most cases, the fans have a rotary knob on the base or head. Some producers include a remote control set with timer function.

If you want a more defined control we recommend the Vornado 6303 DC. It has 99 speeds and allows for better adjustment of the airflow which can be reduced to whisper-quiet operation.

Quiet floor fan

Floor fans are usually positioned near the user and should be operating as quietly as possible so as to not disturb work or sleep. The perceived noise level decreases the further the device is away from the user. 50 dB(A) or less are an acceptable sound level at home or around the office, so make sure to check the item description beforehand.

Where to position the floor fan

In order to prevent injury, fires or damage of the device, place your floor fan on a flat and dry surface without any dust or lint. That means you can also put it on a coffee table etc. as long as the surface is even and steady. The lead wire is laid in a way that it won’t be a tripping hazard. It should not disturb the footway, and should not be placed underneath the carpet, other appliances or furniture. Fan and cable must not be in contact with water, oil or heat. Avoid placing the floor fan near windows due prevent solar radiation, humidity and rain. Fans without splashing water protection are generally not suitable for outdoor spaces and rooms with increased moisture such as the kitchen or bathroom. Furthermore, unprotected units should not be used in the garage or basement.
Oscillating fans should have enough free space around them so the unit can swivel from one side to the other undisturbed. Lose small objects and textiles such as fringes on couches should not be within the air intake area. The protective grille must not be covered because this will impact the airflow. Even though the protective grille is there to prevent any accidents with the fan wheel, still avoid any contact with it, particularly if you don’t have any shoes on. Children and pets should be kept away from the fans.

Air movements floor fan and Vornado circulator

simple floor fan without oscillation blows out air in a certain direction. For a cooling effect in summer the airflow should be directed towards you. These models are not suitable for recirculation of heat in the winter.

circulator moves air in a different, more complex way. The current of air is circulated around the room, meaning the overall temperature evens out. In the summer it remains cool and in winter you can recover heat that would be lost otherwise. This allows you to save heating costs all the year round.

In the summer months it is not necessary to use other climatization appliances, though you can choose to use the floor fan in combination with an AC unit. The moving air feels much cooler on the skin than air that is not circulated at all.

During winter you can choose a low speed to prevent any unpleasant draught. The gentle circulation of air towards the ceiling forces any stagnant heat from the ceiling down to the ground. This also helps to distribute warmth from a fireplace or heater better. Efficiently supporting a source of heat will save energy and money.

Floor fan and fireplace

Common floor fans and their lead wires must not be set up near heat sources due to safety reasons. This includes for example cooktops, open flames and sunlit windows. Surroundings with flammable substances must also be avoided.

Special circulators however are designed to circulate air and warmth throughout the whole room. They should be placed in a minimum distance of three metres to heat sources to protect the device from effects of heat. Read the instruction manual carefully and adhere to the guidelines of the manufacturer.

Floor fan for wall and ceiling mounting

Some floor fans and wind machines can be suspended from walls or ceilings. The required mounting material is usually included in the delivery, however make sure to check each product description carefully.

Do not set up the device next to a source of heat!
