Types and Classes of Protection

Protection type IP after EN 60529
The IP-Code marks the degree of protection against foreign bodies and touch and water for housings and covers that serve to protect electric devices. The IP Code is defined according to IEC 529, EN 60529, DIN VDE 0470-1 and NF C 20-010. In case a code digit is not mentioned - because it is not important for the respective point of view - the letter X is set in place of the digit, e.g. IP X4 or IP 6X.

1st digit Protection against foreign bodies and touch 2nd digit Protection against water ingress
0 Unprotected 0 Unprotected
1 Objects > 50 mm (large surface of the body) 1 Dripping water (vertically falling drops)
2 Objects > 12.5 mm (fingers or similar) 2 Dripping water when tilted at 15°
3 Objects > 2.5 mm (tools, thick wires, etc.) 3 Spraying water
4 Objects > 1 mm (wires, slender screws, large ants etc.) 4 Splashing of water
5 Dust protected (not entirely prevented) 5 Water jets
6 Dust-tight (complete protection against contact) 6 Powerful water jets
/ / 7 Immersion up to 1 meter depth
/ / 8 Immersion 1 meter or more depth

Protection type IK after EN 50102

The degree of protection against outer mechanical stress is realised with the housing for electric equipment is defined with the IK Code according to the norm EN 50102 - VDE 0470 Part 100 and EN 62262.

Protection classes:

Class I
For fans with protection class I protection goal is ensured by the insulation of parts under voltage and the connection of touchable metal parts to the earth wire. The earth wire terminal is marked with the symbol for the protection class I.
Class II
For fans with protection class II electrical appliance is ensured by double insulation.

Product certification marks:

GS mark
For technical work appliances and ready-to-use everyday objects in the sense of the Equipment and Product Safety Act (for these products optionally instead of the VDE mark).

ENEC marks
For commodities after harmonising certification processes.
The basis for the examination are the European standards defined in the ENEC treaty. Products (currently bulbs, components for lighting, energy-saving bulbs, IT devices, transformers, switches, electric regulation and control devices, terminals, plug and socket devices, a few types of capacitators and RFI parts) that are examined on this basis are allowed to be marked with the ENEC symbol. Approval of another centre that takes part in the European certification process is not necessary.

CE mark
The manufacturer documents and explains on their own responsibility that the marked product corresponds to the basic requirements of the EU guidelines. This label is not a certification mark for safety and quality, but complies with the market authorities.

F mark
Indication that lamps can be installed on normal inflammable surfaces.
