Ceiling fans with lighting and remote control

Every owner of a ceiling fan without remote control gets up and manually pulls the cords each time the settings need to be changed. In the long run it is more convenient to opt for a model with an integral remote control or add a remote unit later on. From the comfort of your couch or workstation you will be able to regulate the desired speed level and lighting the ceiling fan by using the transmitter (remote handset).

Air circulation at the push of a button

Even a basic ceiling fan with pull cords has many benefits to offer: It provides you with cooling in summer, forces down warm air from the ceiling to the ground in the winter and is simply a stylish addition to the room. The effort of reaching up to pull the cord might be reasonable if the fan is only used every now and then. If the fan is used frequently, however, it might be more comfortable to opt for a wireless control.

Benefits of ceiling fan remote controls:
Rotation speed, lighting and in some cases changing the running direction of the motor can be adjusted without having to get up from the couch each time to do so. The remote control saves you the trouble of climbing on wobbly chairs to reach the pull cord – high ceilings and shorter people might result in a dangerous situation.

The well-arranged user interface and labelling on the remote control ensures intuitive handling. Generally ceiling fans are equipped with three to six speeds. If you are sweating you need quick refreshing on high speed. After a couple of minutes you can choose a slower setting. A remote control with timer feature for up to 24h or auto-shut off is ideal for bedroom ceiling fans. The fan and light turns of automatically after one hour, to name an example. Another innovative function is a delayed shut-off after up to 99 seconds of leaving the room.

Ceiling fans with lighting are applied in lieu of a ceiling light. The remote control regulates both units (fan and lamp) individually. In the evenings you might want to dim the light down a bit to create a cosy atmosphere. Modern LED DC fans like the Pepeo Raja offer even more options: with the infrared remote control the light can be dimmed, furthermore the colour temperature can be switched from cool to warm lighting.

Connecting a remote control to the ceiling fan

Attaching the receiver unit underneath the upper canopy of the ceiling fan requires a little skill and time. The steps are usually the same:

  • Firstly, the receiver is inserted into the space within the ceiling mount above the base of the down rod. Remove the decorative canopy before.
  • Then connect the cable connection of the receiver with the plug coming from the ceiling mount on one side, and with the plug coming from the ceiling fan on the other side. Take note of the markings on the plugs, they indicate the correct pairing. Some models come without any plugs, in this case simple lustre terminals are used instead. A wiring diagram is included in each ceiling fan or remote control manual.
  • Once this step is done, you can place the canopy on top of the ceiling mount and fasten it with the included screws. The canopy hides the mounted and remote receiver.
  • Now insert the batteries into the remote handset and turn on the power so the fan can start operating. The transmitter offers several buttons that let you choose all of the different features.
  • If you are in the process of adding the remote option to a fan that was previously used with pull cords, make sure the pull cord for the fan is set to “high speed“ and the cord for light is set to “light on“. Do not use the pull cords afterwards, you can even choose to remove the straps if you wish.

Your remote controlled fan is now ready for use.

The most common frequency of the transmitters is 433 MHz. In order to prevent the fan control from interfering with the other electric devices, it is recommended to change the frequencies of the receiver and handset.

Tip: If the fan is not responding to the impulse of the handset, it is likely that the connectors of receiver and fan are conjoined incorrectly. If the electrical connection from the ceiling is joined directly with the cables coming from the fan motor (therefore bypassing the remote control receiver), the remote control cannot work. Please check all connections again and correct them if needed. Finally, the connector from the ceiling mount must be attached to one plug of the receiver and the second plug of the receiver must be connected with the fan.

  • The cables on both sides of the remote receiver unit must not be connected with each other.
  • Check out a more detailed description with pictures in the instruction manual of the Pepeo radio remote control.

Save heating costs with a ceiling fan

The signal transmission from the remote control to the ceiling fan is done via infrared or radio frequency. More recent models also come with an integral temperature sensor that contribute to save heating costs in the winter and transitional season. Two sensors measure the room temperature on the fan itself and on the remote handset, meaning at different levels. Once the sensors detect a certain difference in temperatures on the ceiling and the floor, the ceiling fan automatically begins operating. Warm indoor air is forced down from the ceiling by the rotation of the blades and then mixes with the colder air on the ground, thus creating a more agreeable indoor temperature in the process.

  • Why does the warm air accumulate on the ceiling? Learn more in our guide section.

An efficient heat recovery with a ceiling fan does not necessarily require a remote control with temperature sensors. You can save up to one third of heating costs if you simply let the fan run in reverse on the lowest speed level during the winter (radiator turned on and people present in the room). A digital room thermostat illustrates the change in temperature. A remote control simply adds more convenience and comfort.

FAQ ceiling fan with remote control

How to install the remote control on a ceiling fan?
See Connecting a remote control to the ceiling fan

The ceiling fan does not work with the remote control. If connected directly to the power supply, it works just fine.

Can a ceiling fan with pull cords be upgraded with a remote control at a later time?
If you buy a ceiling fan with lights but without a remote control, it is possible to retrofit the remote control at any time. By using a universal remote control fans of all brands can be upgraded with a remote option.

Ceiling fans with lights: Can a remote control and a wall speed controller be used together?
If the fan is connected to a simple wall switch (light on/off), it is no problem to use an additional remote control. In this case the light switch on the wall regulates the power supply for the fan. The light switch must be positioned in the “on“ setting to receive power.

The note in the item description “Wall control and remote control cannot be combined“ refers to the speed controller for ceiling fans, not the standard on/off light switch.

Ceiling fan with lighting: Dimming and changing the colour temperature on the remote?
The remote control must be equipped with a dimming feature and the additional function for changing the light colour. Not all bulbs are suitable for these special effects, dimming of LEDs and energy-saving lamps is not possible at all in some cases. What is even more rare is a colour change feature for the lighting. These specifications are available in the product description as well as on the packaging of the lamps.

Can a ceiling fan with 3 speeds be upgraded with a 4-speed remote control?
Yes, with the remote control (or wall speed controller) the fan receives an additional, fourth speed level.

What kind of remote controls are available in the the accessory section of the shop?
We have a comprehensive selection of brand and universal remote controls that operate with radio frequency, infrared signal or touch screen.

How many ceiling fans can be controlled with one remote?
Often several ceiling fans are put up in an alternate order in commercial or industrial environments. As long as every fan is equipped with its own receiver unit, all fans can be controlled with the same handset. The remote transmitters and receivers in our range offer up to 16 different radio frequency codings.

Several remote controls for one fan?
In an open plan office or a workshop up to 16 remote control handsets can be used for the same ceiling fan.

What can I do to prevent losing the remote?
One option is to store the remote control in a wall-mounted holder bracket next to the door. That way you always know where the appliance is when entering and leaving the room. In case the handset goes missing, we usually offer spares for sale.
Example: Remote control with wall holder for storage

Is a remote control with light function suitable for ceiling fans without lights?
It is possible in case of some models. Detailed specifications are available in the product description.

Hugger ceiling fan with remote control?
Hugger mount style ceiling fans for rooms with low ceilings do not have a canopy that holds the electric parts. The motor is located directly underneath the ceiling mount. Therefore it could be that there is not enough space to insert the remote control receiver of the unit. In rare cases the receiver can be fitted next the the housing, however most people do not find this solution aesthetically pleasing. However, there are quite a few fans for low ceilings that already include a remote control.

Which ceiling fans cannot be used with a remote control?
Some hugger mount style fans or ECO fans are not suitable for a remote control. Partially because universal remote controls only work for AC motor fans – Usually eco-friendly DC fans are already delivered with a remote control suitable for the technology. Please check our item descriptions.

When is there no need for a remote control at all?

  • If you already have a programmable remote control for several devices.
  • If you want to use a wall speed controller or pull cords. This can be a useful option for outdoor fans, because a pull cord or controller is always in the same place and cannot get lost.
